6 essential oil treatments for dandruff

For the longest time I had a dandruff problem which seemed not to go away no matter how much I shampooed or moisturised my scalp. The breakthrough finally came when I added tea tree oil to my hair care regimen. Dandruff has several causes such as yeast infection, poor diet or certain skin conditions. Below are other essential oils in addition to tea tree oil which can be used to reduce dandruff and to relieve itching and flaking.

1. Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea tree oil is particularly effective against fungal and bacterial infections. It also soothes itchy skin caused by dandruff.

2. Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties that help to soothe the scalp.

3. Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil soothes and cools the scalp and helps to calm itchiness and to combat flaking.

4. Lavender Essential Oil

This is a gentle moisturiser with powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties promoting a healthy scalp and helps to eliminate dandruff.

5. Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass essential oil has anti-septic and anti-inflammatory properties and provides itch relief.

6. Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil restores oil balance on the scalp and it is a powerful anti-oxidant. It also has anti-septic properties and works against fungus and bacteria causing dandruff.

Treatment Instructions

2 tablespoons of your preferred carrier oil (coconut oil, castor oil or sweet almond oil)
2 drops of essential oil

Mix well the essential oil and carrier oil as per above. Apply to scalp and massage gently. Leave in for 30 minutes to an hour before shampooing. You can also add 1 or 2 drops of essential oil to your regular organic or natural shampoo.
